Private Equity International’s ranking of the industry’s largest investors shows growing appetite for the asset class amid a pandemic-changed world.

The pension funds, insurers, sovereign wealth funds and other investors that make up our Global Investor 100 ranking hold more than $1.2 trillion in private equity assets, up 19 percent from our 2020 ranking.

Sixteen new entrants also made it to the list, including three investors from outside North America.

The top three leading investors this year are CPP Investments, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and GIC. The top 10, meanwhile, represent about a third of this year’s GI 100 by PE exposure, up 12 percent from the previous year’s top 10.

To appear on this year’s list, an institution needed a PE portfolio worth at least $3.5 billion. That is 46 percent larger than last year’s minimum of $2.4 billion.
